Most businesses search for the packaging they know, not always the protection they need. Bubble wrap, boxes, foam and paper are familiar starting points. But the right solution depends on the product, the risks and the journey.
Someone needs to send a fragile product across Australia.
What do they search for?
Probably not: “Multi-layer protective packaging for combined surface and impact protection.”
They search for:
Bubble wrap.
Boxes.
Packing paper.
Foam.
How to pack fragile items.
Refrigerated transport.
And that makes perfect sense. Most people know what they need to protect long before they know what should protect it.
That distinction matters.
Because the packaging product someone asks for isn’t necessarily the packaging problem they actually need to solve.
And there are a lot of products travelling. In 2025, 9.8 million Australian households shopped online, spending a record $82.6 billion. More goods moving through more hands means packaging decisions matter at every stage of the journey.

“I need some bubble wrap.”
Maybe.
Bubble wrap is one of the most familiar protective packaging products around. So when something is fragile, valuable or awkward to ship, it’s often the first solution people think of.
But when a customer says: “I need bubble wrap” they might actually mean:
- I need to stop this breaking.
- I need to stop it moving inside the box.
- I don’t want this polished surface scratched.
- I’m worried about the corners.
- I’m shipping sensitive electronics.
- Our current wrapping takes too long.
Same request.
Very different problems.

Start with the risk, not the roll
Instead of starting with:
What packaging do you want?
A better question is:
What are you protecting against?
Is the risk:
Surface damage?
Scratching, rubbing or marking?
Movement or impact?
Drops, vibration, breakage or shifting inside the package?
Temperature?
Heat exposure or changing conditions during the journey?
Or is something else happening during handling, storage or delivery?
Once you understand the risk, choosing the material becomes much easier.
And sometimes the product someone first asks for isn’t wrong.
It’s simply wrong for that particular job.
More packaging doesn’t always mean more protection
When we’re worried about something arriving safely, there’s a very natural instinct:
Wrap it more.
More bubble. More paper. More void fill. Another layer, just to be sure.
But quantity doesn’t automatically solve the problem.
A fragile product can still move inside an oversized carton. Corners can remain exposed. The grade of bubble may be too light for the item.
And a product can be heavily cushioned while the material touching its surface creates another problem entirely.
More material doesn’t always mean less risk.
Sometimes a better result comes from using less material more intelligently.
A correctly sized bubble bag can reduce wrapping.
The appropriate bubble grade can improve cushioning.
The right void fill can control movement.
Packaging designed around the shape of the product can also reduce pack time and make protection more consistent.
That matters commercially too.

Amazon researchers demonstrated this at significant scale.
After changing packaging recommendations for more than 130,000 products based on characteristics including dimensions, weight and fragility, damage rates fell by 24% and transport cost per shipment fell by 5%.
Packaging material cost actually rose slightly, by 2%.
The lesson? The cheapest packaging material doesn’t necessarily deliver the lowest overall cost.

That tells us something important:
The cost of packaging is bigger than the cost of the material.
Damage, returns, packing labour, transport efficiency and customer experience count too.
The material touching the product matters
Take a polished stainless-steel component.
Standard bubble may cushion it against knocks.
But what if the problem is the finish?
Sancell’s real-world examples include polished metals, powder-coated components, furniture and artwork where surface protection needs to be considered separately from impact protection. Foam, protective films and laminated materials may be used because the layer directly against the product performs a different job from the cushioning around it.
It’s the same with electronics.
Ordinary bubble may provide physical cushioning, but sensitive computer or medical technology components can also require tested anti-static protection.
So something can be beautifully wrapped and still be poorly protected.
That’s why protective packaging isn’t one-size-fits-all.
The material, grade, laminate and application all matter.

The lesson is simple:
Protecting something from breaking and protecting it from damage are not always the same job.
The journey changes the answer
Packaging also needs to be designed around what happens between here and there.
Take a temperature-sensitive food product.
The automatic assumption might be:
“We need refrigerated transport.”
But that isn’t always the case.
For many suitable metro, regional and selected interstate deliveries, a correctly designed cold-chain pack-out using a carton, thermal liner or insulated bag, and the right gel-pack configuration can provide the required temperature protection without putting the entire shipment into a refrigerated vehicle.
That can change the economics of delivery significantly.
But the system has to be designed around the journey.
- What is being shipped?
- What temperature range does it need?
- How long will it be in transit?
- What are the ambient conditions?
- Could it spend time sitting at a depot or on a doorstep?
Those details determine the pack-out.
Fresh produce, for example, may only need additional thermal protection against a relatively short period of heat exposure after delivery. Dairy, seafood, artisan foods or pharmaceutical products may need a more controlled configuration for longer journeys.

The principle is the same:
You don’t necessarily need to refrigerate the whole journey. You need to protect the product for the journey it will actually experience.
And I think that last line is the real thought-leadership point.
It shifts cold chain from “put it in a refrigerated truck” to engineering a controlled environment around the product.
Customers arrive with a product, not a packaging specification
A pottery maker doesn’t need to become a cushioning expert.
A cheesemaker shouldn’t need to understand thermal packaging terminology before starting deliveries.
A manufacturer shipping polished components shouldn’t have to know the difference between every protective laminate before asking for help.
They arrive with something they need to get from A to B safely.
That’s the starting point.

These questions change the conversation. Because the goal isn’t simply to sell the material someone already knows.
It’s to understand the problem that made them ask for it.
Good packaging starts before the product is chosen
The best protective packaging isn’t necessarily the thickest. Or the most expensive. Or the one everybody recognises.
It’s the one that addresses the actual risk.
So if you don’t know exactly what protective packaging you need, that’s okay.
Start with three questions:
- What are you protecting?
- What are you protecting it against?
- What will happen to it between here and there?
From there, the packaging becomes much easier to work out.
Because customers don’t need to know the name of the material they need.
They need to know that the people supplying it understand the problem they’re trying to solve.
