As an Australian plastics manufacturer, we understand the impact our products can have on the environment. For this reason; energy efficiency, waste reduction and minimisation are at the forefront of our manufacturing and product development processes. Sancell’s commitment to best practice and constant improvement is proven through our ISO 14001 Environment Management System and dedication to numerous environmental initiatives.

Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation

In early 2020, we became signatories of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation. As a member, we have committed to meeting the 2025 National Packaging Targets and all regulatory obligations under APCO’s framework to track and improve performance through action plans and annual reporting.

These targets apply to all packaging that is made, used and sold in Australia; and require a complete and systemic change to the way we create, collect and recover our product packaging. In the last 12 months, we have implemented several positive changes to our manufacturing processes to put us on track to achieve the National Packaging Targets by 2025. View our latest APCO Report and Action Plan here.

REDcycle

REDcycle’s closed loop program diverts soft plastics from landfill by encouraging post-consumer recycling at over 1850+ drop off points nationwide. As official partners of REDcycle, all Sancell products suitable for recycling are approved for deposit through the program including our Bubble Wrap, EnviroTherm Thermal Liners and Armour Padded Mailer Bags. Once collected, these recycled plastics are sent to REPLAS where they are re-purposed into a range of useful outdoor products such as decking, furniture, bollards, signage and fencing.

ANZPAC Plastic Pact

As a member of the ANZPAC Plastic Pact, we have promised to:
1. Innovate processes that encourage consumer engagement to recycle, and eliminate problematic and unnecessary plastic packaging.
2. Invest in solutions that focus on opportunities to reuse, repurpose and recycle.
3. Knowledge sharing and collaborating with other members on key issues and opportunities.
4. Working with other members towards four ambitious targets by 2025:

VIC TAKE2 Pledge

By taking the TAKE2 pledge for Climate Change, we have committed to a lower carbon future and investing in tools and technologies that will result in lower operating costs. The pledge focuses on incorporating and improving energy efficiencies, renewable energy, waste management, transport costs and responsible purchasing to help Victoria achieve net zero emissions by 2050. We are approaching the TAKE2 pledge as an action plan for our business to reduce our carbon footprint. View our latest APCO report for an outline of our progress towards the pledge.

GreenPower

On the 1st of January 2021, we adopted 25% renewable energy with Green Power, saving 458 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation; Green Power provides energy generated from 100% renewable sources such as solar and wind.

ISO

In addition to holding ISO 9001 Quality and 45001 Health and Safety, we have held an ISO 14001 Environment certification since 2009. To claim conformity to ISO Environment, all requirements outlined by ISO must be incorporated into our environmental management system and maintained on an ongoing basis without exclusion. In addition to this, we must take steps to continually improve our processes to maintain our certification.

Internal Processes

Our biggest internal focus for 2020 was to reduce our waste to landfill by 25%. To achieve this, we allocated a team of environmental enthusiasts known as the ‘Enviro Squad’ who worked hard to create innovative solutions to reduce waste from our packaging products. With weekly waste to landfill meetings and a monthly superior waste report to track our progress, we took the additional time to focus on even the smallest processes to make a significant difference.

In 2020, we reduced our waste to landfill by 89%. Our Melbourne team have decreased waste bins from an average of 8.8 bins to just 1 bin per month, while our Sydney team have reduced their average from 9 bins per month to just 4. We have also successfully eliminated all labels from Gel Pack Cartons across our Melbourne and Sydney facilities and saved 1,203kgs of waste to landfill per year. Not only are we sending less waste to landfill, but we are also sending less to external recyclers; essentially, we are producing less waste and recycling more in-house.

So, what do our Environmental Initiatives mean for our customers?

Continual Improvement

Our dedication to numerous environmental initiatives demonstrates that we are a responsible and future-focused organisation that is 100% committed to improving the environment. We know the standards that need to be met, and we have the tools in place to ensure consistency and continual improvement. It does not mean our environmental management system is perfect, rather that we are consistent in continually identifying opportunities, learning from them, and ensuring systems are revised and put in place to minimise our environmental impact. By doing this for the last 10 years we have made significant reductions in our industrial waste and consumption of natural resources.
